Island Wide Effort Strikes Drug Points
Police arrested 61 persons in simultaneous in eight regions Thursday, Police Superintendent José Figueroa Sancha and Justice Secretary, Guillermo Somoza Colombani reported.
The simultaneous efforts in the regions of Aguadilla, Aibonito, Arecibo, Caguas, Guayama, Mayagüez, Ponce, and San Juan was part of the “Golpe al punto” (Striking the Point) police operation
“We remain active in the fight against crime, especially the war on drugs, striking drug points across the entire island,” said Figueroa. “The joint operation, in which 114 warrants were served, recorded all the arrested persons conducting illegal activities, giving police convincing proof to prosecute them for their crimes.”
Justice Secretary Somoza was pleased with the results, since it achieved 100 percent determination of probable cause for arrest at the hearing (Rule 6), and a 96 percent at the preliminary hearing. Total bail was approximately $429 million.
“These numbers continue to increase,” said Somoza. “As of today, we have a 96 percent conviction rate in the cases filed before the courts.”
“During the past 15 months, these operations have hit multiple drug points, restoring peace and confidence to communities at the mercy of traffickers,” said Somoza.
The Superintendent noted that police are committed to their mission of protecting life and property, and urged citizens to cooperate by calling the confidential line at 787-343-2020.
“The fight against crime affects us all and we must work together, instilling the values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, kindness, and civility so that Puerto Rico once again becomes the law and order society we all want,” said Figueroa.
